DNA Bank

The IMPPC is setting up a DNA bank of the population of Catalonia

The DNA bank will provide epidemiological, clinical and biological (genetic, epigenetic, proteomic) information for a significant and representative sample of the population of Catalonia. This will enable us to discover the risk factors and the real and specific mechanisms of susceptibility to disease and help us progress towards a new model of predictive medicine.

DNA Bank of the Population of Catalonia

The Institute of Predictive and Personalized Medicine of Cancer is an active leader in the change from the actual model of diagnostic and curative medicine to a new predictive and personalized model. A key step in the IMPPC strategy is the provision of a DNA Bank for the population of Catalonia.

The Institute of Predictive and Personalized Medicine of Cancer is an active leader in the change from the actual model of diagnostic and curative medicine to a new predictive and personalized model. A key step in the IMPPC strategy is the provision of a DNA Bank for the population of Catalonia.

The DNA bank is set up with an alliance between the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO), the Blood and Tissue Bank and the Ministry of Health of the Generalitat.

The bank facilities are located at the IMPPC, where they will be managed and the strategy defined according to the current legislation.

The Blood and Tissue Bank will provide the necessary biological samples. The ICO will provide epidemiological know-how and the Ministry of Health will provide information about health histories associated with the samples, this will always be anonymous.

Characteristics of the Bank

The DNA Bank for the population of Catalonia is a biomedical research platform that will contain samples and information for 50,000 people. At each level the protection of personal data will be assured using the latest protocols.

For each donor the bank will have:

  • Biological sample of DNA, cells, serum, proteins, plasma and blood
  • Epidemiological data
  • Reports on events in health history

Users of the Bank

  • Research centers
  • Hospitals
  • Pharmaceutical companies
  • Biotech Companies

Potencial Impact of DNA Bank

The DNA Bank ant its associated research activities can contribute to the following:

  • Acceleration of discovery of new predictive markers and risk factors for illnesses
  • Creation of a world class resource for biomedical research
  • Contribution to the creation of new biotech companies
  • Identification of new and more effective therapies
  • Reduction of treatment costs
  • Reduction of development costs for new drugs
  • The recuperation of drugs
