The Badalona mutation discovered by IMPPC researchers
The unit for advanced genetic diagnosis for rare iron metabolism diseases (UDGAEMH) in the Institute of Predictive and Personalized Medicine of Cancer (IMPPC) led by Dr. Mayka Sanchez has discovered a new mutation, the Badalona mutation, causing hereditary hyperferritinemia with cataracts syndrome (HHCS) in a Spanish family. This new mutation, along with previously discovered mutations, can be identified by genetic testing and allow the disease to be correctly diagnosed. Sometimes cases of HHCS have been confused with another genetic disease, Hereditary Hemochromatosis, which leads to the wrong treament being given to patients.

Fumiichiro Yamamoto and the ABO Histo-blood Groups and Cancer Laboratory discover the molecular genetic basis of the human Forssman glycolipid antigen negativity
In a paper published today in Scientific Reports the Yamamoto group resolves a classic question in Glycobiology. The heterophilic Forssman glycolipid antigen has a structural similarity to the histo-blood group A antigen and the GBGT1 gene that codes for the Forssman glycolipid synthetase (FS) is evolutionarily related to the ABO gene. Dr Yamamoto is well known for his ground-breaking work on defining the genetics behind the ABO blood groups, and this current work clarifies the functioning of the second in the family of four closely related genes, which specifies the expression of the Forssman antigen.

Human genes with CpG island promoters have a distinct transcription-associated chromatin organization
Tanya Vavouri, Junior Group Leader at the IMPPC has just published her first paper for the IMPPC in Genome Biology. The paper, co-authored with Ben Lehner of the Genetic Systems group at the CRG, describes how the type of promoter in which transcription is initiated influences the chromatin of human genes.
