L'IMPPC joins the IGTP to consolidate research on the Can Ruti Campus
The SUMA Programme started in 2013 is hailed as a great success
The process of reorganization of the research institutes on the Can Ruti Campus, and in particular the integration of the Institute of Predictive and Personalized Medicine of Cancer (IMPPC) into the Germans Trias Health Research Institute (IGTP) and the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) has been successfully completed with the final signature of the Generalitat of Catalonia. The process started in 2013 within the framework of the SUMA Program set up by the Universities and Research Secretariat in the (then named) Ministry of Economy and Knowledge and the CERCA Foundation. In line with the SUMA objectives the fusion aimed to promote more dynamism and synergies, encourage joint multidisciplinary projects and increase critical mass of researchers on the Can Ruti Campus. Four groups have joined the IJC and the remaining 6 groups and support personnel have joined the IGTP. The fusion has been possible thanks to maximum coordination between the three institutes and is the result of a consensus; there will be no jobs lost.
The Integration of the scientific activities of the IMPPC with the IGTP and the IJC has also been made much easier by the proximity of the three institutes in the northern area of the Can Ruti Campus. Some of the shared technical platforms will be sited in the new IJC building. These changes boost the strength of research on solid and liquid tumours on the campus.
The IGTP is accredited as a Centre of Health Excellence by the Instituto Carlos III and it represents the backbone of research on the campus. The Strategic Plan 2014-2017 has already provided for the incorporation of a team of International Project Managers and the setting up of the Innovation and Technology Office, both of which have already born fruit with an increase in results in 2015 for projects applied for and granted and patents registered. During 2016 there will also be reinforcement of the technical platforms to further improve the service to the researchers of the many diverse fields on the campus.
