The Endocrinologist Manel Puig Domingo is the new Director of the Health Sciences Research Institute of the Germans Trias i Pujol Foundation (IGTP)
Dr Puig is taking over from Dr Miguel Àngel Gassull, director of the IGTP until now. Dr Gassull will now be managing the areas of Innovation and European Projects for the institute.
Manel Puig will bring his experience and knowledge of the campus to the post; until now he has been Chief Physician of the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service at the Germans and Trias University Hospital (Can Ruti). He will continue to combine this with his new post, aided by Dr Mauricio Puente as Clinical Chief at the hospital. Dr Puente joins the hospital from the Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital in Lerida, where he was Chief of the Endocrinology Service and Lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Lerida.
The IGTP, as well as carrying out pioneering research in the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital and its laboratories, is also an accredited Center of Excellence for Scientific Research recognized by the Carlos III Institute (ISCIII) in 2011. The center of excellence includes the dedicated IGTP research laboratories, the Guttman Institute, the IrsiCaixa Institute, the Badalona branch of the Catalan Institute of Oncology and the IMPPC, amongst others. The IMPPC shares technical facilities with the IGTP and the two institutes colaborate on various projects, they also jointly organize the Can Ruti Symposia.
Biosketch of Manel Puig Domingo
Dr Puig graduated in medicine in 1988 at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and undertook his residency at the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service at the Sant Pau Hospital (Barcelona). He spent two years as a researcher at the University of Texas Health Science Center before returning to Sant Pau as a researcher and practicing doctor, where he was Coordinator of the Experimental Endocrinology Laboratory. He has been Medical Director of the Maresme Health Consortium, Scientific Director of the Hospital at Mataró and Vice President of the Catalan and Spanish Societies of Endocrinology and Nutrition.
After receiving his diploma for Health Services Management he worked at the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service at the Hospital Clínic Hospital in Barcelona. Since 2010 he has been Chief Physician of the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service at the Germans and Trias University Hospital (Can Ruti) and since 2011 he has been the director of the Rossend Carrasco i Formiguera Foundation.
Dr Puig's is actively involved in teaching; he is a Lecturer on the graduate courses at the Faculty of Medicine at Barcelona University and has directed 4 doctoral theses. He has signed 26 research projects as principal investigator, published 151 papers in international scientific journals and edited two books on endocrinology as well as authoring another 42 chapters on the same subject. He has been awarded 5 prizes from scientific and professional societies; he is a reviewer for 7 scientific journals and a member of 8 scientific societies, including two in America.
