Mònica Suelves's project is focused on the study of epigenetic changes, which take place normally during muscle lineage- commitment, cell activation and terminal differentiation. We are analyzing the dynamics of the histone modification profiles and DNA methylation patterns during the myogenic differentiation process, using in vitro and ex-vivo cellular models and next-generation genomic technologies. Epigenetic alterations have profound effects on many pathologies, since histone modifications and DNA methylation influence gene expression. In the laboratory, we are characterizing epigenetic changes regulating muscle physiology that could be altered in muscle pathologies such as muscular dystrophies and rhabdomyosarcomas. Our results will contribute to better understand the epigenetic dynamics occuring during muscle cellular differentiation in physiological and pathological conditions.
