Mayka Sanchez has a PhD in Biology (University of Barcelona, 2002); the main interest of her doctoral thesis focused on Hereditary Hemochromatosis, a genetic iron-overload disease. She spent seven years as postdoctoral researcher (2002-2009) in three international and prestigious research centres in Heidelberg, Germany (EMBL, University of Heidelberg and MMPU). Her postdoctoral studies focused in the identification of novel IRE-containing mRNAs controlled by the IRP/IRE regulatory system. Her work has uncovered previously unrecognized mRNAs that specifically interact with IRP1
