Mayka Sanchez of the Iron and Cancer group at the IMPPC was at the Haemochromatosis Association's stand at the TV3 Marathon this year. The marathon, organized by the leading Catalan TV station was devoted to rare diseases in the 2009 edition. Dr Sanchez works closely with the association, which provides support and information for patients and families with haemochromatosis, a rare but often treatable disease in which the body accumulates too much iron. Dr Sanchez studies haemochromotosis and its connection with cancer.
During the day the Catalan Minister of Health, Marina Geli, visited the stand and talked to Josep Maria Ferrando Colea, who is a patient and the Vice-president of the association, Mari Angels Ruiz Mínguez who is a member and Dr Sanchez of the IMPPC. Also pictured is Esther Sorribes, a secondary school student doing a project on the illness.
