Leader of the Chemoresistance Group at the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO-IDIBELL)


Alberto Villanueva studied biology in the University of Barcelona. His PhD thesis was completed in the Laboratory of Gastrointestinal Research of the Hospital of Sant Pau (Barcelona) working on pancreatic cancer under the supervision of Dr. Gabriel Capellá. He was a Postdoctoral fellow in the Memorial Sloan Kettering-Cancer Center (MSKCC)(New York, USA) during the period 1999/2002. In 2002, he move to the Laboratory of Translational Research, at the Catalan Institut of Oncologia and in 2008 obtained his current position as a leader of the Chemoresistance Group at ICO-IDIBELL. Dr Villanueva leads several research lines focusing on deciphering the molecular mechanism related with the acquisition of resistance to the standard chemotherapy treatment, mainly to cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). He investigates resistance mechanisms in advanced tumor models of drug resistance generated in nude mice by orthotopic implantation of primary human tumors as well as in the model organism C.elegans. In addition, in collaboration with several pharmaceutical companies these tumor models are used in studies for different drug development stages.
